There needs to be way less leinency on those accused of animal abuse. Animal abuse should have the same sentencing as abuse on humans as we are all animals after all and we are not above them. As a first-world country I feel that its absolutely necessary that we tighten up our punishments and laws on the treatment of animals and help other countries follow suit. While time-consuming and costly, yes, I feel as though on the whole the benefits will be reaped.
Stricter laws in the food industry are necessary as commercialized animal products are more often than not raised in horrendous conditions with little restriction. Not only is it not good for the animal, its not good for us either. It used to be generally more acceptable to kill animals for food because it was more of a mutual understanding and it was done in the most humane and repectable way for the animal. Nowadays, they are disease-ridden and weak, locked up in a cage too small for them until they are sent off to the slaughterhouse. Obviously the harsher conditions on the animal, the sicker and weaker they get, which isnt that grat for us either. To recap, the animal by-product industry is so commercialized that the animals dignity and wellbeing, as well as the humans health is sacrificed to save a quick buck. Little morbid? I think so too.
Overall, there is too much room for mistreatment of animals to get entirely out of hand. As it already has gotten out of hand. Livestock are excluded from protection from most protection laws and often times, they need it the most. Not even to mention that the most a person can get for animal abuse is maybe a couple years in prison and/or a couple thousand in fines. Though awareness is rising, exotic animals are becoming more and more of a target to die at the hands of a money-monger. Protection is rising at a very slow rate. Too slow of a rate.
